Naomi Watts - Biography

 

Naomi Watts made her acclaimed U.S. debut in David Lynch’s MULHOLLAND DRIVE - screened in Cannes in 2001 - a role for which she earned Best Actress awards from a number of critics’ organizations including the National Board of Review and the National Society of Film Critics. The following year, she starred in Gore Verbinski’s THE RING and in Nick Hurran’s romantic comedy PLOTS WITH A VIEW.

In 2003, she played alongside Heath Ledger, Orlando Bloom and Geoffrey Rush in Gregor Jordan’s NED KELLY and then starred in James Ivory’s LE DIVORCE with Kate Hudson and Glenn Close.

In 2004, she was honoured with an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s drama 21 GRAMS. Her performance in the film, in which she starred alongside Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro, also garnered Best Actress Awards from many film critics associations as well as Best Actress nominations from the SAG Awards, BAFTAs and Golden Satellites.

The same year, she played in John Curran’s WE DON’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE, Niels Mueller’s THE ASSASSINATION OF RICHARD NIXON in which she starred again opposite Sean Penn, and David O. Russell’s I HEART HUCKABEES.

In 2005, she took back her role as a journalist in Hideo Nakata’s THE RING 2. She also starred alongside Ewan McGregor and Ryan Gosling in Marc Forster’s STAY and then played the delicate Ann Darrow in Peter Jackson’s KING KONG alongside Adrien Brody and Jack Black.

The following year, Naomi Watts had the lead role and produced John Curran’s THE PAINTED VEIL opposite Edward Norton. Her other recent credits also include David Cronenberg’s EASTERN PROMISES (2007), Michael Haneke’s FUNNY GAMES U.S. (2008) and Tom Tylwer’s THE INTERNATIONAL (2009).

In 2010, she played Josh Brolin’s wife in Woody Allen’s YOU WILL MEET A TALL DARK STRANGER, CIA agent Valerie Plame in Doug Liman’s FAIR GAME and Annette Bening’s daughter in Rodrigo Garcia’s MOTHER AND CHILD which won the Grand Prize at the Deauville American Film Festival last year.

She will next be seen in Jim Sheridan’s DREAM HOUSE alongside Daniel Craig and Clint Eastwood’s J. EDGAR opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.
