His brothers: Chris Penn and Michel Penn (musician)

His wife: Robin Wright Penn (April 26, 1996) with whom he has two children: Dylan and Hopper

Former wife: Madonna 1985/89

His father was director Leo Pen, a Jew of Russian and Lithuanian blood and his mother was actress Eileen Ryan,  Irish-Catholic. His grandparents ran a Jewish deli in New York.


Sean debuted doing short films in 8mm.  He joined the Repertory Theater of Los Angeles

1987 He served 32 days in jail for hitting an extra during one of his movies.

1991 Sean Penn directed his first feature film:" the Indian Runner"

2003 In  "Mystic River", of Clint Eastwood, Sean Penn interprets the role of family leader.

2004 He received the John Steinbeck award at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. The award is given out by the San Francisco Chronicle and benefits San Jose State University.

2004 Sean Penn won the prize of the best actor in the 76 Ceremony of the Oscar Academy Awards for his role in Mystic River
